Montréal Gateway Terminals Orders 10 New Electric “E-RTGs” powered with Conductix-Wampfler Conductor Rail
Drive-In L Solution for Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes
On Oct. 2, 2018, MGT announced the purchase of 10 “E-RTGs” (electrified rubber-tired gantry cranes) for the two Port of Montreal operations. There will be five going to Cast Terminal and five to Racine Terminal. The press release stated that “The electrically-operated, environmentally-friendly cranes will provide many benefits in terms of noise and emissions reduction, and will allow MGT to continue to offer its customers an exceptionally efficient and productive service. This investment follows the successful retrofitting in 2016 of two existing RTGs with a [Conductix-Wampfler] conductor bar system to allow for full electric operation.”
The release further stated that, “The conductor bar connection that will be used for this project is the Conductix-Wampfler drive in L system, which ensures a quick engagement of the Liebherr RTGs from the conductor bar system. A ProfiDAT data transfer system, which allows for accurate transmission of high data volumes in real-time, will also be included. The cranes will be fitted with diesel generators sets allowing for operational flexibility and travelling between stacks.”

The new cranes utilize Liebherr’s Liduro heavy-duty crane system with a 40.6 tonne capacity and can stack containers over 5 high. Productivity and safety aids including DGPS, automatic gantry steering, and anti-collision systems will also be included. The units optimize electric consumption through the use of LED lighting.
